Henry Ford was left to die in a Chickasaw County pasture. Have a Heart Horse Rescue was contacted by concerned neighbors to come save Henry Ford. When HAH arrived, Henry Ford had been down for 30 hours and was within hours of dying.
His sad state attracted the news media's attention because his owner was the sheriff of Chickasaw County, MS, who had just won re-election. Although the articles, Nems360 and WTVA, aren't entirely accurate, they do report parts of Henry Ford's story and show how messy a rescue can get when humans are involved.
To get Henry Ford up and able to load into the trailer, a Henry Ford tractor was brought in to lift him. The tractor's name soon became the horse's name.

Once he arrived at Have a Heart's Rescue Facility, Henry Ford was given a warm stall with round-the-clock care, including food and water.

Every time he lay down in pure exhaustion (more than 11 times in the first week), volunteers would come over at all hours to help Sheila get him back on his feet using straps, and a tractor because Henry Ford was too weak to even help a tiny bit.

Volunteers came out and helped string a temporary fence for Henry Ford in Have a Heart's front yard, where she can keep a close eye on him during the day and the grass is best for grazing.

Henry appears to be on the mend. He still needs help getting up, but his horrific pressure wounds (from laying in that field for so long) are beginning to heal.
If you would like to see his wounds, click here. WARNING they are GRAPHIC!

Facebook posting from Mississippi Horses:
Sadly, Sheila decided last night it was best to let Henry go. The vet came out and he was humanely euthanized. At least he passed away with a full belly, warm and in the arms of people that loved him. Thanks for all the prayers and kind words. Sorry sheriff but to say that "he was just old" and that "his back end was messed up" is absolutely no excuse to allow a 17 year old horse to get in this condition.
If Henry Ford's story has touched your heart, please consider helping Have a Heart Horse Rescue. Also, if you see a horse in trouble (no food, no water, emaciated, injured, abused, or otherwise mistreated), please contact authorities. If they won't help, call a Horse Rescue, like Have A Heart.
