BALDWYN - A nonprofit horse rescue agency with dwindling food supplies seeks donations of hay to help it through the winter.

Have A Heart Horse Rescue had stockpiled 65 round hay bales to feed the three dozen injured and abused equines it has saved from throughout the state. But in the past three months, the group took in an additional four dozen horses - many from Northeast Mississippi.

Food supplies now are down to 18 bales, which at the rate the animals eat will last until about Christmas. After that, Have A Heart Director Sheila Horton said she's not sure what she'll do.

"We're a nonprofit, and we work through donations," Horton said. "We can't afford to buy as much hay as we need to feed all these horses."

Have A Heart began in 2007 on a small ranch in Baldwyn and has since grown to include several acres in Coila. It partners with law enforcement agencies throughout Mississippi, as well as with local animal shelters, the Humane Society of the United States and other animal rescue agencies.

Most of the horses it rescues are starved, abused, neglected, abandoned or unwanted. Once at the ranch, horses are rehabilitated and either adopted out to good families or allowed to live the rest of their lives on the ranch.

Horton said hay donations will be gladly accepted at her Baldwyn ranch, or she can make arrangements to pick up the hay directly from the donor.

"There is such a need," she said. "It's unreal."
